Submersible vs. jet pumps
Submersible pumps sit down in the well and push water up. They handle any depth, run quietly, and are standard for drilled wells. Deeper settings need more horsepower, longer pipe and wire, and more labor to pull and reset.
Jet pumps sit above ground, in a basement or well house, and pull water up by suction. Shallow-well jets work to about 25 feet. Deep-well jets use a second pipe to reach about 110 feet. They are cheaper and easy to service but less efficient.
Check these first
Before paying for a new pump, have the contractor rule out cheaper failures:
- Pressure switch ($50–$250): burned contacts are a common cause of "no water".
- Pressure tank: a tank with no air charge makes the pump short-cycle.
- Breaker or control box: tripped breakers and failed capacitors in 3-wire systems.
- Low water level: in droughts, the pump may need to be set deeper rather than replaced.
No water is an emergency. Many well companies charge extra for nights and weekends. If you can wait until a weekday, you will usually save $150–$500.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to replace a well pump?
Most submersible well pump replacements cost $1,500 – $4,500 installed, depending on depth. Jet pumps for shallow wells cost $600 – $1,800. Adding a pressure tank adds $400 – $1,500.
How long do well pumps last?
Submersible pumps usually last 8–15 years, and jet pumps 8–10 years. Short-cycling from a failed pressure tank, sediment, and running the well dry shorten their life.
How do I know my well pump is failing?
Signs include no water or sputtering taps, low or fluctuating pressure, the pump running constantly, a tripped breaker, higher electric bills, and air or sediment in the water. A bad pressure switch or tank can cause the same symptoms and costs far less to fix.
Should I replace the pressure tank with the pump?
If the tank is more than 10 years old or waterlogged, yes. A failing tank makes the pump cycle on and off constantly, which burns out a new pump early. Replacing both at once also saves a second service call.
Can I replace a well pump myself?
Jet pumps above ground are a manageable DIY job. Submersible pumps hang on hundreds of feet of pipe and wire and weigh a lot when full of water, so pulling them usually requires a pump hoist truck. Most homeowners hire a well contractor.
