What drives the price

  • Fixture count. Each fixture needs its own hot and/or cold line and connection.
  • Pipe material. Copper costs more for material and takes longer to solder.
  • Access. Crawl spaces and unfinished basements make runs easy. Slab homes are usually repiped through the attic and down the walls, which adds 10–20%.
  • Stories. Two-story houses need more vertical runs through finished walls.
  • Drywall. Plumbers cut small openings at each fixture. Patching and painting is often a separate line item.

Signs your house needs repiping

  • Galvanized steel pipes: gray, threaded, and magnetic
  • Polybutylene pipes: gray or blue plastic marked "PB2110"
  • More than two or three pinhole leaks in copper within a few years
  • Low pressure at every fixture, not just one
  • Brown or rusty water when you first open a tap

Get an itemized quote. Ask how many fixtures are included, what pipe brand and size, whether drywall repair is included, and whether the main line from the meter is replaced. Those four items explain most of the difference between quotes.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to repipe a house?

A typical 2-bathroom house costs about $6,150 – $15,800 to repipe in PEX, including drywall patching and a permit. Copper costs roughly 50–70% more. Slab homes cost more because lines are rerouted through the attic.

Is PEX or copper better for repiping?

PEX is cheaper, faster to install, resists freeze damage, and does not corrode, which is why most repipes now use it. Copper lasts 50+ years, resists UV and rodents, and some buyers prefer it. In areas with very aggressive water, PEX avoids the pinhole leaks copper can develop.

How long does a whole-house repipe take?

Most single-family repipes take 2–5 days. Water is usually off only during the day, and the house is livable throughout. Drywall patching adds 1–3 days.

When should a house be repiped?

Common triggers are galvanized steel pipes (typical in homes built before 1960), polybutylene pipe (gray plastic used 1978–1995), repeated pinhole leaks in copper, low water pressure throughout the house, and rusty or discolored water.

Does insurance pay for repiping?

Insurance usually pays for water damage from a sudden leak, but not for replacing old pipes. Some insurers refuse to write or renew policies on homes with polybutylene or galvanized pipes, which makes repiping necessary.
