Trench vs. trenchless
Trench replacement digs along the full length of the line. It is straightforward and cheaper per foot, but lawns, driveways, and walkways on top must be restored.
Trenchless replacement digs one pit at the meter and one at the house. A new pipe is pulled through with a boring tool or by bursting the old pipe. It costs more per foot but often less in total when concrete, mature trees, or landscaping sit over the line.
What drives the price
- Length: the single biggest factor.
- Depth: cold-climate lines are buried below the frost line, often 4–6 feet deep.
- What is on top: driveways and walkways add concrete work to trench jobs.
- Pipe size and material: larger lines improve pressure but cost more.
- Permits and utility coordination: required almost everywhere.
Check for lead-line programs. If your house has a lead or galvanized service line, your utility may replace it, or subsidize the cost, under federal lead pipe rules. Call before you hire a plumber.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to replace a main water line?
A typical 50-foot line from the meter to the house costs about $2,900 – $12,600 by trench in a mild climate, including permit and lawn repair. Deeper northern lines, driveways over the line, and long runs push costs higher.
Who is responsible for the water line, the city or the homeowner?
In most U.S. cities, the utility owns the line up to the meter or curb stop, and the homeowner owns the service line from there to the house. Check with your water utility, because rules vary.
Do I have a lead service line?
Homes built before the 1960s, and some into the 1980s, may have lead service lines. Scratch the pipe where it enters the house: lead is soft, dull gray, and turns shiny when scratched, and a magnet will not stick. Many utilities are replacing lead lines under federal rules, sometimes at little or no cost to homeowners, so ask yours before paying.
What are the signs of a leaking water line?
A soggy strip of lawn between the street and the house, a water bill that jumps without explanation, the water meter moving when all taps are off, low pressure, and sinkholes or cracks in the driveway.
What pipe is used for new water lines?
Most new service lines are PEX, HDPE polyethylene, or type K copper. PEX and HDPE are flexible, resist freezing better, and are commonly used for trenchless pulls.
