What a new sump pump installation includes
- Cutting and breaking a hole in the basement floor, usually at the lowest point or where an interior drain ends
- Digging out soil and setting a sealed basin with gravel around it
- Installing the pump, a check valve, and a discharge pipe through the rim joist or wall
- Running the discharge at least 10–20 feet from the foundation so water does not cycle back
- Patching the concrete around the basin
Choosing a pump
- 1/3 HP handles most homes with average water.
- 1/2 HP suits high water tables or long, high discharge runs.
- Cast iron housings shed heat better and last longer than plastic.
- Vertical float switches are more reliable than tethered floats in narrow pits.
Tip: the discharge line should never tie into the sanitary sewer. Many cities ban it and fine homeowners for it. Discharge to the yard, a dry well, or a storm drain where allowed.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to install a sump pump?
Replacing a pump in an existing pit costs $500 – $1,300. Installing a new pit, which means cutting the basement floor, costs $1,500 – $3,500. A battery backup adds $500 – $1,200.
How long does a sump pump last?
Most sump pumps last 7–10 years. Pumps that run constantly, or cheap plastic models, may last only 3–5 years. Test yours every few months by pouring water into the pit.
Is a battery backup sump pump worth it?
Yes, if a flooded basement would be costly. Storms that fill the pit are the same storms that knock out power. A backup costs far less than a single flood cleanup, which often runs $3,000–$10,000 or more.
Pedestal or submersible sump pump?
Submersible pumps sit in the water, run quieter, and handle more water. Pedestal pumps sit above the pit, cost less, and last longer, but are louder. Most installers recommend a submersible for basements that take on real water.
Can I replace a sump pump myself?
Swapping a pump in an existing pit is a common DIY job if the discharge pipe and check valve are in good shape. Cutting a new pit through a concrete floor is best left to a pro.
